Five StreetMapper’s Take to the Roads in Japan
StreetMapper, the mobile laser mapping system, has announced delivery of its fifth system to Japan in less than a year. The StreetMapper equipped vehicles enable 3D laser scan surveys to be undertaken at normal road traffic speeds and are being used for a range of mapping projects across Japan. StreetMapper, a joint development between the UK’s 3D Laser Mapping and German navigation specialist IGI, is distributed by Japanese company Mirukuru.
“Feedback from our client’s show the StreetMapper systems are mainly being used in road mapping projects,” commented Shinji Inaba of technical consultancy company, Mirukuru. “Using StreetMapper they can achieve greater accuracies of measurement and a much denser and more complete point cloud cover. All at a fraction of the price of more traditional airborne or terrestrial surveys.”
Asia Air Survey were the first company in Japan to adopt the highly accurate mobile mapping system, making headlines with their use of StreetMapper to assess the damage caused by the earthquake in March 2011. Building on this successful application the specialist surveying company has recently purchased a second system. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the national organisation for surveying and mapping, has also recently taken delivery of a StreetMapper Portable system, while construction consultants ASCO are already operating two similar solutions.
“As well as the high profile use of the StreetMapper system assessing the structural damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami last year, we have also had reports of StreetMapper systems being used for power line mapping, 3D city modelling as well as road profile and section measurement and asset data collection,” continued Inaba.
StreetMapper has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted lasers offering a 360-degree field of view, StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 550,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres.

PCI’s GXL Technology Successfully Used to Process 1m imagery for ArcGIS Online World Imagery
Richmond, Hill - Ontario, Canada - PCI Geomatics, a world-leading developer of geoimaging software and systems, announced today that the GXL Cloud system it deployed for Esri in 2011 has successfully been used to process large volumes of 1 meter pansharpened Ikonos imagery. Imagery processed through the use of the GXL Cloud system is now available for free through ArcGIS Online.
The imagery processed using PCI’s GXL system was published to the ArcGIS Online World Imagery map earlier this month. Expanded coverage is now available for Korea and several countries in the Middle East and North Africa – with several more updates planned over the coming months. DigitalGlobe Providing Broader Content Across Microsoft Bing Maps and Xbox
Longmont,CO - DigitalGlobe, a leading global provider of high-resolution earth imagery solutions, today announced two licensing agreements with Microsoft.
The first agreement more than doubles the volume of high-resolution imagery DigitalGlobe delivers to Microsoft for use in its Bing Maps service. The imagery, delivered on a quarterly basis, will provide refreshed content covering millions of square kilometers of the earth's surface, including up-to-date imagery for the world's highest-density urban areas.

The Forza Motorsport series is one of the world's most realistic and successful racing franchises. The latest installment, Forza Motorsport 4, features the first-ever combination of DigitalGlobe satellite and Microsoft aerial imagery into a seamless gaming experience, resulting in unprecedented, true-to-life detail.
Forza 4 game designers selected many high altitude and low altitude images for each track region featured in the game and combined them into a seamless animation sequence, using advanced memory management techniques. The result gives players the experience of travelling across the globe in Forza Motorsport 4's World Tour mode.
Both agreements took effect in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Online Energy Map Set to Reduce Household Bills in Nottingham
London - A pioneering new online energy tool has been launched in Nottingham, England that can help residents make big savings on their energy bills. The Nottingham Energy Calculator allows residents to select their property and return information on the savings which insulation, double glazing, new boilers and solar panels can bring. It also provides an interactive map which shows planning constraints and other existing renewable installations across the city.
The interactive energy tool, is underpinned by the council’s Local Land and Property Gazetteer (LLPG) together with other Ordnance Survey Public Sector Mapping Agreement (PSMA) products which are freely available to the whole of the public sector.
The Energy Calculator has been developed by Nottingham City Council, working with Nottingham Energy Partnership and other selected organisations including ESRI UK. It has been developed as part of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) Local Carbon Frameworks projects and supports Nottingham’s key energy ambitions; specifically to reduce 2005 carbon dioxide emissions by twenty-six percent and generate twenty percent of all energy and heat from low carbon and renewable sources.
Integrating the LLPG and OS MasterMap with additional intelligence from 3rd party suppliers, alongside data and survey results from strategic partners, has allowed the development of a definitive and reliable property level database. This includes property type and age, building footprint area, average height and gas supply, as well as solar energy generation calculations and viability flags for other types of green energy installations. The comprehensive dataset and associated modelling also underpins a dynamic mapping tool which aides strategic decision making and planning in relation to renewable energy installation, for example identifying suitable sites for large scale wind and de-centralised heating systems.
“Our energy tools are an innovative way of tackling the need to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, increase the energy independence of the city and help our citizens save money on their energy bills,” commented Councillor Alan Clark, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Energy and Sustainability. “The Nottingham Energy Calculator will help us raise awareness of the practical steps citizens can take in their own homes.”

CoreLogic Report Shows Tornado and Hail Risk Extends Far Beyond Great Plains States
CoreLogic (NYSE: CLGX), a leading provider of information, analytics and business services, today released a new tornado and hail risk report that analyzes the risk associated with changing tornado and hail weather patterns outside of the narrow corridor in the U.S. Midwest traditionally known as “Tornado Alley.” The report, entitled Tornado and Hail Risk Beyond Tornado Alley, discusses the impact of record-breaking hazard events across the country over the last year for insurance companies and homeowners, and provides greater insight into the extent of severe tornado and hail risk in geographic regions far beyond the Great Plains states.
“The extensive destruction wrought by convective storms in 2011, which produce hail, strong winds and tornados, captured the attention of the public and forced many insurance companies to rethink the way they assess natural hazard risk,” said Dr. Howard Botts, vice president and director of database development for CoreLogic Spatial Solutions. “The apparent increase in the number of incidents and shift in geographic distribution of losses that occurred last year in the U.S. called the long-held notion of risk concentration in Tornado Alley into question, and is leading to changes in risk management policy and procedure.”
Tornado Alley is typically considered to encompass mainly the Great Plains states and surrounding areas, spanning Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota and Illinois. For that reason, many of the severe weather events that occurred outside of the Midwest in 2011, like the “Super Outbreak” of tornados that devastated much of Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and even Virginia, were seen as an anomaly. According to CoreLogic, however, historical data suggests that the frequency and severity of storms is much more widespread than commonly believed.
Among key findings, the CoreLogic tornado and hail report notes:
The perceived dramatic increase in the frequency and severity of tornado and hail events in recent years could be attributed to a number of factors, including improved observational tools, broadened geographic distribution of modern Doppler radar stations, population growth and migration to suburban areas.
24/7 disaster news reporting via television, online coverage and social media have greatly affected public awareness and likely heightened sensitivity to severe weather events in recent years.
There is growing scientific evidence that there has been an increase in the actual number of severe weather outbreaks as the result of rising global temperatures.
Actuarial analyses of claims losses associated with severe weather events in 2011 will likely cause many insurers and enterprise risk managers to approach state Department of Insurance Commissioners with rate change requests in 2012.
Tornado Damage Beyond Tornado Alley
Tornado risk actually extends across most of the eastern half of the U.S. rather than being confined to the Midwest.
According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), of the top ten states with the highest number of tornado touchdowns between 1980 and 2009, only three actually fell within Tornado Alley.
At least 26 states have some area facing extreme tornado risk.
Estimated property damage within the Tornado Alley states from 2000-2011 was approximately $2.5 billion, while in comparison, the 16 states located outside of Tornado Alley with the next highest numbers of tornado touchdowns totaled nearly $15.5 billion in property damage. Those states range from Illinois and Ohio to Mississippi and Alabama, extending as far north as parts of Minnesota and as far south as Florida.
Hail Damage Beyond Tornado Alley
At least 11 states have significant areas facing extreme hail risk, and almost every state east of the Rocky Mountains has some area facing a moderate or higher level of hail risk.
The area of highest hail risk extends outward from the central Great Plains to include states as far east as Georgia and the Carolinas.
Hail storms in the Tornado Alley region caused approximately $4.3 billion in property damage and nearly $1 billion in crop damage between 2000-2011. The 16 states with the next highest amounts of hail damage outside of Tornado Alley revealed about $3.2 billion in property damage and $400 million in crop damage over the same time period. Those states span as far west as New Mexico and as far east as South Carolina and Georgia.
The maps and analysis included in the tornado and hail risk report were generated using the recently launched proprietary CoreLogic property-level risk assessment tools, Wind Probability and Hail Probability. These analytics were designed to provide insurers with a unique level of spatial and content granularity for tornado and hail risk. Unlike most generalized wind and hail data, which provide a risk rating for large geographical areas, the CoreLogic risk model uses 10 x 10-kilometer (6.2 x 6.2 miles) grid cells to pinpoint and predict the probability of a wind or hail event occurrence. The scientific models used to develop the data layers produce more precise results than other products that base their calculations on ZIP codes or counties.

PCI Geomatics Announces Availability of Online Courses for Geomatica

MDA, Geosemble Integrate Tools for Satellite Imagery
Geosemble Technologies and MDA Information Systems, Inc. (MDA) have announced an initiative to integrate two of their respective products in order to provide enhanced situational awareness for a range of government and commercial users of satellite imagery and maps.
The MDA product, known as Persistent Change Monitoring (PCM), provides a process for detecting changes over time for features in satellite imagery. The change indicators can be used as a cuing tool for intelligence analysis by identifying new permanent features such as roads, tunnels, and other structures of interest. These features can then be confirmed with high resolution data.
Geosemble Technologies’ product, known as GeoXray, is a geospatial monitoring system in which locations on the earth are monitored for mentions across vast feeds of data coming from news, blogs and social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The system employs a sophisticated text-matching algorithm that accurately links content to places down to the building level, without the need for addresses, latitude/longitude or in some cases even the name of a city. Users of GeoXray can adjust the area of interest in real time - either by enlarging or shrinking the area of interest, or by moving to another area - and get a correspondingly different read-out of content for that area. Further, users can superimpose filters on the content returned for a given area to restrict information to only their topic of interest. Users can then set alerts for desktop and mobile devices.
Working together, PCM and GeoXray complement each other in that many of the users of satellite imagery and maps experience inefficiencies in both areas that PCM and GeoXray address – namely, time consuming research and analysis to achieve current understanding of physical features for an area as well as the “human geography” of an area as revealed by associated information from social media and other sources.

Most change detection algorithms detect so much seasonal vegetation and crop change, that the real feature change is obscured. In contrast, PCM removes a great deal of false change by using multiple imagery dates to filter out seasonal false indicators. PCM relies on the fact that transient vegetation such as agriculture and forests keep changing, but features such as a new road or housing development persist.
GeoXray™ is a software product that spatially enables unstructured text from the internet and other sources so that viewers can geographically “see” what’s related to a particular area of interest, either in a map view or as a list of textual content. First Geologic Map of Jupiter’s Moon Io Details an Otherworldly Volcanic Surface
Flagstaff, AZ - More than 400 years after its discovery by Galileo, the innermost large moon of Jupiter – Io – can finally rest on its geologic laurels.A group of scientists led by Dr. David A. Williams of Arizona State University has produced the first global geologic map of the Jovian satellite. The map, which was published by the U. S. Geological Survey, technically illustrates the geologic character of some of the most unique and active volcanoes ever documented in the solar system.
Since its discovery in January 1610, Io has been the focus of repeated observation, first by Earth-based telescopes, and later by fly-by and orbiting spacecraft. These studies depict an otherworldly celestial body whose gravitational relationships with Jupiter and sister moons Europa and Ganymede cause massive, rapid flexing of its surface and interior. This flexing generates tremendous heat in Io's interior, which is relieved through surface volcanism, resulting in 25 times more volcanic activity than occurs here on Earth.
"More than 130 years after the USGS first began producing quality geologic maps here on Earth, it is exciting to have the reach of our science extend across 400 million miles to this volcanically active moon of Jupiter," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "Somehow it makes the vast expanse of space seem less forbidding to know that similar geologic processes which have shaped our planet are active elsewhere."
The Io geologic map is unique from other USGS-published planetary geologic maps because surface features were characterized using four distinct global image mosaics. Produced by the USGS, these image mosaics combine the best images from NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 missions (acquired in 1979) as well as the Galileo orbiter (1995-2003).
This uniqueness presented a particular cartographic challenge. "Io has undergone major surface changes during the past few decades due to its volcanic activity," notes Dr. Ken Tanaka, a USGS research geologist who coordinates the review and publication of planetary geologic maps. "Conveying information from multiple image mosaics in a single map necessitated the use of unique and complementary map symbols, colors, and feature names."
In many cases, these maps show that, despite the many differences between bodies in our Solar System, there are many notable similarities that link the evolution and fate of our planetary system together.
The highly detailed, colorful map reveals a number of volcanic features, including: volcanic domes and depressions, lava flow fields, mountains, plume deposits, and sulfur- and sulfur dioxide-rich plains. Despite this geologic diversity, there is one particular feature that is common to the Moon, Mars, and even Earth that is not depicted on the geologic map of Io — impact craters.
"Io has no impact craters. It is the only object in the Solar System where we have not seen any impact craters, testifying to Io's very active volcanic resurfacing," says project lead David Williams.
The new geologic map of Io is just one of many cartographic products that help drive scientific thought. The production of these products has been a focal point of research at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center since its inception in the early 1960s. "Remotely characterizing the surfaces of planetary bodies [such as Io] forces scientists to carefully consider and test hypotheses that address the evolution of an entire planet," says Dr. Ken Herkenhoff, Acting Director of the USGS Astrogeology Science Center.
USGS began producing planetary maps in support of the Apollo moon landings, and continues to help establish a framework for integrating and comparing past and future studies of extraterrestrial surfaces.
The project was funded by NASA through its Outer Planets Research and Planetary Geology and Geophysics Programs.

EIGS Announces Successful Partnership with Digital Quest
Stennis Space Center, MS – The Enterprise for Innovative Geospatial Solutions (EIGS) is pleased to announce its recent partnership with Digital Quest, a national leader in geospatial education, is already producing solid results. The partnership was formed to enhance the EIGS workforce development program with Geospatial certifications.
The State of Florida recently adopted the “S.P.A.C.E.” (Spatial Projects and Community Exchange) certification series created by Digital Quest and sponsored by EIGS. Florida included these new Geospatial certifications as part of its 2012-13 approved condensed “Comprehensive Industry Certification List” for the state’s Career and Professional Education (CAPE) Act.
EIGS is a program of the Magnolia Business Alliance, which is a non-profit, industry-independent organization formed by Cluster members with a passion to enhance the small business ecosystem in the region. Members have access to business support, counseling and classes that provide services using geographic information systems and allied technologies. The overarching goal of MBA is to make it easier for people to start or do business in the region. The partnership with Digital Quest is one example of how the program is intended to spur economic growth in the region.
“Workforce development is an essential element of any industry,” said Tom Koger, Executive Director of EIGS. “It is especially important in the rapidly growing, technology-based geospatial industry which is changing daily. We chose the S.P.A.C.E. certification because it is continually developed with extensive collaboration from both industry and academia to ensure the training is relevant and the workforce needs of the industry are met.”
The national, industry-backed geospatial S.P.A.C.E. series of courses are designed to allow students to use GIS skills in the context of selected community-based topics. This series fits a variety of needs in an organization. Whether students are looking for introductory to intermediate training or in need of continuing education, S.P.A.C.E. courses can provide a solid foundation on which to build.
The S.P.A.C.E. certifications are independently backed by the Enterprise for Geospatial Solutions (EIGS), Mississippi Enterprise for Technology (MsET), and the Magnolia Business Alliance (MBA). These organizations include some of the most innovative and influential companies in the geospatial industry.

Esri Donation Supports Collaboration with OpenStreetMap Community
Redlands, California - Esri president Jack Dangermond affirmed his commitment to making map content accessible to everyone with a monetary donation to the OpenStreetMap Foundation. The OpenStreetMap Foundation's initiative, OpenStreetMap(OSM), strives to create and provide free geographic data, particularly street maps, for use worldwide. The mission of this nonprofit organization parallels Esri's efforts to empower people to share a common picture of the world through map-based information over the web.
"Publishing data as map services is one of the most valuable ways we can communicate and collaborate with each other," said Dangermond. "Maps enable an immediate understanding of patterns and relationships. The OSM Foundation and its volunteers have made geographic data available in areas of the world where it has been lacking to foster understanding of complex problems. We are happy to support their efforts."
One powerful example of OSM's efforts took place after the earthquake in Haiti, when project volunteers crowdsourced a street map of the capital city, Port-Au-Prince, and other places in the country. Mapping was completed rapidly with high-resolution imagery, which was used to trace vector maps of streets and other features, and by people on the ground using handheld GPS devices. This allowed first responders to provide assistance and start planning for rebuilding as quickly as possible.
"We're thrilled to receive this support from Esri—not just the donation but the integration within their tools," said Steve Coast, OpenStreetMap project founder. "We love it when Esri and its customers get excited about OpenStreetMap, because they understand better than anyone how to unleash the potential of raw geodata."
OpenStreetMap data is one of the basemaps used on Esri's ArcGIS Online, a cloud-based, collaborative content management system for maps, apps, data, and other geographic information. The OSM basemap is available for use in any Esri environment including desktop, mobile, and via the web.
Esri users can become active members of the OSM community by using ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap. The editor is a free, open source add-on for ArcGIS for Desktop that provides the ability to download OSM data, make changes to the dataset, and contribute those changes back to the OSM community. The ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap download, documentation, and source code are available on CodePlex, Microsoft's open source repository, and released under the Microsoft Public License.
