Geographic Information Systems Demonstrate Links Between Health and Location

San Diego, CA - April 10, 2012 - The neighborhoods in which children and adolescents live and spend their time play a role in whether or not they eat a healthy diet, get enough exercise or become obese, concludes a collection of studies in a special theme issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Each of the six studies uses the latest concepts and methods in geographic information systems (GIS)-based research to determine how the geographic location affects physical health. A study titled “Spatial Classification of Youth Physical Activity Patterns” shows, for example, that while rural youth get the largest proportion of their physical activity while at school, urban and suburban youth are most active when commuting. Not only does this finding suggest that the walk to school might be just as important to some children’s health as is the physical education they receive as part of the school curriculum, it is also important given that adolescent health behaviors are predictive of behaviors in adults.

Another study by researchers in the United Kingdom concludes that adolescents in rural areas ate fast food more often when fast-food outlets were easily accessible, whereas the opposite was true for adolescents living in urban areas. The researchers, led by Lorna J. Fraser of the University of Leeds, conclude that although the need continues to exist for nutritional education regarding fast food, placing restrictions on the location of fast-food outlets may not decrease consumption of fast food in the same ways in all areas.

Brian E. Saelens and Lawrence D. Frank, along with their colleagues, authored two papers for the theme issue. “Obesogenic Neighborhood Environments, Child and Parent Obesity: The Neighborhood Impact on Kids Study” evaluated child and parent weight status across neighborhoods in Seattle and San Diego and ultimately found evidence that GIS-based definitions of obesogenic neighborhoods that consider both physical activity and the availability of healthy food options were strongly related to childhood obesity.

In a second study, the researchers used GIS-based measures to determine the ‘walkability’ and proximity to healthy food of certain neighborhoods in the San Diego and Seattle regions. The study recommends that such measures be used to study physical activity, nutrition and obesity outcomes.

In a paper titled “Obesogenic Environments in Youth: Concepts and Methods from a Longitudinal National Sample,” Janne Boone-Heinonen and colleagues describe the challenges inherent to longitudinal neighborhood environment research, as well as the insights they gained and the advances and remaining gaps in study design. The researchers note that understanding which neighborhood environment features influence weight gain in various age groups is essential to effectively prevent and reduce childhood obesity.

Two commentaries included in the theme issue examine the ways that computer-based GIS systems—which transform geospatial data into visual representations of the real world—can help prevent childhood obesity. “Thinking About Place, Spatial Behavior, and Spatial Process in Childhood Obesity” by Stephen A. Matthews, outlines the content of the theme, concluding that although GIS is not a panacea, it “offers an important means of better understanding and dealing with some of the most pressing problems of our time, and provides valuable tools for researchers and policymakers alike.”

The second commentary, providing a perspective from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, notes that while GIS is still in the relatively early stages of application in the field, it might one day enhance understanding of the complex and dynamic connections between people, their health and their physical and social environments.

3D Collaboration to Support Newcastle’s Solar City Project

The new partnership between Ordnance Survey and Newcastle City Council will demonstrate how 3D city models can provide valuable information to enable effective solar power generation.

Both organisations are members of a European project consortium called i-SCOPE (Interoperable Smart City Services through an Open Platform for urban Ecosystems), which will run for three years and will involve 11 cities across Europe.

Newcastle was a logical city to be selected for i-SCOPE, because of its experiences in a number of projects already undertaken, including solar analysis, 3D modelling and thermal heat loss tracking. The city has also made good progress in becoming a ‘hub’ for the low carbon economy, with plans at an advanced stage in preparing the city to become a ‘Green Deal’ provider. High profile European projects such as i-SCOPE offer extra support to the city’s carbon economy work, providing residents and businesses with new innovative choices, helping them deliver, and meet, their own sustainability projects and objectives.

Under the i-SCOPE project, Ordnance Survey will be supporting Newcastle through expert technical support and advice on all mapping-related issues to develop 3D urban models of Newcastle. Across the other 10 European cities the 3D models will be used for noise mapping and personal routing in addition to solar power generation. Ordnance Survey will also play a leading role across the project on 3D data standards, and specifically in extending the CityGML standard.

Peter ter Haar, Ordnance Survey Director of Products, comments: “The i-SCOPE project will provide Ordnance Survey with an opportunity to test and validate the value of 3D city models in a practical way. We anticipate a rich future for 3D data and this is an excellent collaborative vehicle for sharing expertise across a European consortium.

“I am confident that by working in partnership with Newcastle City Council we can demonstrate the true potential that 3D city models can play in creating sustainable urban areas. 3D mapping will enable town and city planning departments, and solar panel installation companies, with a true ‘real world’ view of rooftops and building heights. From this high quality data, users can analyse the pitch and angle of roofs, look at neighbouring building heights and determine where shadows will fall. The 3D city models will ultimately allow effective positioning of solar panels.

“In addition to solar panel analysis, 3D mapping can play an important role in underpinning other critical functions, including flood prevention and town planning. Other potential users could include the emergency services. Imagine the emergency services being able to accurately visualise the scene of an incident before arriving. They would have foreknowledge of points of access, be able to see any obstructions and know the size and shape of any buildings involved. This technology could have a genuine impact on people's lives.”

PK Wins InterSystems Breakthrough Application Award

InterSystems Corporation, a global leader in software for connected care, today announced that PK, a software firm based in The Netherlands, has been recognized with the InterSystems Award for Breakthrough Applications. PK, an InterSystems application partner, was recognized for its CU-BOX® mobile application for real-time emergency services response measurement.

CU-BOX® leverages the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance database system and InterSystems Ensemble® rapid integration and development platform to provide critical, objective information about the quality of emergency healthcare delivery. The solution includes mobile applications that plot the emergency response timeline by storing key timestamps such as departure time of an emergency vehicle and arrival time at the patient's location and at the hospital. CU-BOX also includes a geographical information system (GIS) and an automated tracking system based on Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. Status information such as the emergency vehicle location and current vehicle status -- vehicle is immediately available or vehicle is arriving at patient location, for example -- are displayed in real-time at the emergency department at the destination hospital.
Reliability, High Performance, Support for Rapid Application Development

"We faced two major technical challenges in developing the CU-BOX solution," said Jack Paas, founder and President of PK. "The first was the requirement to create a mobile data communication network that offered extremely high reliability and security while also providing the speed and power to enable real-time interaction between emergency vehicles and hospital-based emergency departments. Just as important was the need to capture and integrate all of the data needed to prove the quality of the logistics process during an emergency call."

PK developers selected CACHÉ as the database for data flowing between emergency vehicles operated by first responders and emergency department personnel. "CACHÉ offers the high performance and reliability that are essential for real-time information delivery," Paas said. InterSystems Ensemble was used to build the integration processes that support real-time data flow and accurate measurement and reporting of emergency response processes. "The combined capabilities of CACHÉ, Ensemble and other InterSystems technologies made it possible to build a mobile solution for emergency scenarios that is completely unique in a new market niche," Paas said. "In addition, InterSystems technologies support very rapid application development, a capability that is vital to successfully responding to ongoing organizational, legislative and technology changes in the highly fluid healthcare environment. CU-BOX is a true breakthrough in proving and improving the quality of the commitment of healthcare providers in emergency response situations," Paas stated.

From Development to Market Expansion

CU-BOX was initially developed to enable healthcare providers to deliver accurate data about responding to emergency calls to the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ), an agency in The Netherlands that promotes public health through enforcement of health services quality, prevention measures and medical products. Product development began with a proof-of-concept in 2Q11 and was finalized by year-end. It is now being used on a pilot basis by several ambulances and will be marketed to emergency departments and police and fire departments throughout the Netherlands.

Plans are to build a local customer base and to connect with the Dutch 911 emergency response network so that the location of emergency vehicles throughout the country will be visible through CU-BOX. "Once we've accomplished those objectives, we'll be looking for partners in emergency healthcare in order to effectively market and distribute CU-BOX in Europe," Paas said.

"The CU-BOX solution clearly illustrates the innovations that are made possible by merging new mobile platforms with InterSystems' database, integration and Web technologies," said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. "It's a pleasure to highlight PK's significant achievement in emergency services response measurement with the InterSystems Breakthrough Application Award."

"We are delighted and honored to be recognized with this international award," Paas said.

Trimble Acquires Gatewing to Expand its Survey Solutions to Include Aerial Mapping

Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) announced today that it has acquired privately-held Gatewing of Gent, Belgium, a provider of lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for photogrammetry and rapid terrain mapping applications. The acquisition broadens Trimble's industry-leading platforms for surveying solutions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

UAVs in combination with photogrammetry are an emerging technology providing an innovative platform for flexible aerial imagery acquisition. Easy to use and flexible, UAVs provide users the ability to create orthophotos and Digital Surface Models (DSM) from aerial imagery for mid-sized areas previously only accessible at higher costs and with longer planning cycles. UAVs are used in a variety of applications including preliminary surveys for corridors and rights-of-way, volumetric surveys, high-level topographic surveys, land fill inspection, and much more.

Gatewing's solutions include the X100 UAV and Stretchout desktop software for digital image processing and analysis. The X100 is an ultra-light, 2 kg (approximately 4.4 lbs) class UAV that allows fast and simple image acquisition. It consists of an airframe; an integrated GPS, inertial system and a radio; a 10 megapixel camera; and battery. Using the Trimble® Yuma® tablet computer, a predefined area is planned and the flight of the UAV is fully automated from launch to landing. The terrain is mapped through parallel flight paths and consecutive, overlapping camera shots during flight. The ground control station (GCS) is used to monitor the mission and allows an on-site image quality check. In addition, the GCS provides the operator with the option to intervene and abort the flight if needed. The image set consists of a number of digital images that are tagged with the GPS coordinates.

Designed to be intuitive and easy to use, Gatewing's Stretchout desktop software uses advanced computer vision technology which automates raw image processing to deliver georeferenced orthophotos and accurate DSM. As an alternative to the desktop software, users can upload images to Gatewing's cloud solution, which automatically processes the images based on the users' requirements. After a few hours, users can download their georeferenced orthophotos and DSMs from the cloud server including feedback about the results for quality assurance.

"The combination of UAVs and low-altitude photogrammetry as an image collection platform opens up new opportunities for surveyors to use aerial imagery for the rapid acquisition of high-density geospatial data," said Anders Rhodin, director of Trimble's Survey Business. "We are excited to add Gatewing's unique aerial mapping system to Trimble's portfolio of survey solutions."

"The Gatewing team is excited about the new ownership," said Maarten Vandenbroucke, CEO and one of three founders of Gatewing. "For Trimble to see the value in unmanned aerial systems for surveying and mapping applications means that the industry is truly ready for this exciting new technology. We are enthusiastic about how UAVs can revolutionize the landscape and open a complete new spectrum in remote sensing applications. I believe that being a part of Trimble will accelerate the pace in which UAVs will further be adopted by professionals."

Founded in 2008, Gatewing designs and provides one of the world's fastest and easiest to use remote sensing solutions for the surveying and mapping industry. Based on its revolutionary X100 lightweight unmanned aircraft, Gatewing has built a solution for rapid terrain mapping that consists of image acquisition field operation and fully digital and automated image processing. By making this technology highly accessible in terms of price and ease of use, Gatewing's goal is to revolutionize the surveying and mapping industry.

Trimble applies technology to make field and mobile workers in businesses and government significantly more productive. Solutions are focused on applications requiring position or location—including surveying, construction, agriculture, fleet and asset management, public safety and mapping. In addition to utilizing positioning technologies, such as GPS, lasers and optics, Trimble solutions may include software content specific to the needs of the user. Wireless technologies are utilized to deliver the solution to the user and to ensure a tight coupling of the field and the back office. Founded in 1978, Trimble is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Merrick GeoSpatial Group Providing Services Covering 23,500 Square Miles for Oklahoma and Nebraska

Merrick & Company’s  (www.merrick.com)  geospatial solutions group is currently providing high-resolution digital elevation data from LiDAR, covering 11,005 square miles of various watersheds located in Oklahoma. Work is being done under a contract with URS Corporation, who is the prime consultant, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS). By utilizing the LiDAR technology, data will be used by Oklahoma NRCS to generate digital elevation models and contours for use in a wide variety of conservation practices including erosion control, wetland restoration, flood control, and breach inundation studies for Emergency Action Plans on High Hazard dams.   Merrick has supported Oklahoma NRCS since2006 with similar services.

Currently, Merrick is working under contract with Magnolia River (Huntsville, AL) to provide airborne LiDAR acquisition of 12,495 square miles through Nebraska from the northeast to the southwest regions. The work also includes Merrick post-processing services. This work is a continuation of work completed for the Nebraska NRCS office since 2006.

Merrick’s findings on this work will be used for the following needs:

Delineation of Wetland Watersheds – the lynchpin of the RWI is the delineation of watersheds for the thousands of wetlands in the Rainwater Basin. Because of the low relief in the Rainwater Basin, this is only possible with detailed elevation data provided by LiDAR.
Soils Mapping – used to determine slope and aspect which is to be used to reduce the time and cost to map soils accurately.
Conservation Planning – plan and design terraces, buffers along streams, and stream restoration planning which will help in reducing water pollution and help with maintaining the sustainability of the land.
Dam Breach Analysis – model the effects of dam breaches to determine the area that would flood for dam safety assessments.
Floodplain  Mapping Engineering Design and Reviews

Accuprint Adds Personalized Maps to Their Variable Data Printing Services

Accuprint has added yet another powerful tool to their variable data printing and direct marketing services with variable, personalized map printing. As the marketing community continues to embrace the dynamic capabilities and revenue generating power of variable data printing, Accuprint owner Don Blais and his staff are continually seeking new ways to give clients a competitive edge in their vertical markets. “With this personalized mapping system, we’re yet again bringing unique direct marketing solutions to the marketplace,” he said. Custom, personalized maps are the perfect solution for retail businesses, as well as those with multiple locations, where the convenience of geographical proximity can lead consumers to choose one business or brand over another. “Just seeing a customized map on a direct mail piece, and realizing how close a business is to their location, is enough to persuade many prospects to use that business instead of their competitor,” Blais said.

Use of variable data printing has been steadily increasing over the past few years. This printing technology allows each sheet coming off a digital press to be uniquely versioned with personalized data specific to the recipient, which in turn leads to greater response rates. Also known as personalization, database marketing, 1:1 (one to one) and relationship marketing, it is a powerful method of creating more personally relevant and engaging communications with customers. This personalization can be applied to text, images, or even complete layouts and offers.

Using a standard mail list, Accuprint applies GIS (Geographic Information System) coordinates to each address. These are then transposed onto a map image, and a driving route is traced between the recipient’s address and that of the mailer. “It is truly a fascinating process to watch. We’ve been searching for ways to bring this feature to our customers for quite some time,” Blais said. “One of the most exciting features of these personalized maps is our ability to scan multiple business addresses, and then find the location that is closest to the prospect. So each map not only shows the starting point, such as a homeowner’s address, but also an individualized route to the nearest business location.” Banks, credit unions, car washes, medical facilities, grocery stores, or any retail business can benefit from this marketing technology. It is particularly powerful with new homeowner and mover mailings, where a consumer may not yet be familiar with an area.

Accuprint is one of the few print providers in the area now offering these specialized direct marketing solutions. While businesses might traditionally use an agency for strategy and creative development, a commercial printer for production, and then a mailhouse for mail processing, the marketing professionals at Accuprint handle the entire campaign process, start to finish, in-house. Doing so not only dramatically cuts costs, but also shortens the time to market, and eliminates potential conflicts between data, print procedures and mailing requirements. “Variable data, and in particular variable imaging such as mapping, requires tremendous attention to detail. The smallest misstep can ruin a campaign. By controlling the entire process in-house, from the initial exploratory meeting with our customers all the way through to the mail drop, we eliminate the possibility of miscommunication, data or production errors,” Blais added.

The value of this personalized mapping technology, and variable data printing in general, is realized in the revenue generation for marketing organizations. According to the DMA, average response rates for generic mass marketing traditionally hovers in the 1.3% range. Using personalization as part of a strategic direct marketing campaign has been shown to lift response rates by 50% and more. “Well executed cross-media campaigns including personalization, direct mail, email, mobile and web, particularly in more sensitive verticals, have shown response rates of 5% to 8% and more,” Blais said. “While the technology and production process itself is exciting, it’s the increase in response rates and revenue for our customers which keeps us constantly looking for the next marketing edge,” he concluded.

Celebrating 25 successful years in 2012, Accuprint provides traditional offset and digital printing services, large format printing, direct mail, and cross-media direct marketing. Specialized services include the integration of new digital media such as email, web, mobile and social media with traditional print marketing. With two convenient locations, business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, call 518-456-2431 or visit http://www.accuprint.com.

Woodall's Campground Data Now on Board Rand McNally RV GPS Devices

Just in time for the spring RVing season, Rand McNally has added the Woodall's campground directory into its top-selling TripMaker® RVND GPS devices. Woodall's, part of the Good Sam family of RV clubs, community and publications, is North America's leading source of campground information for RVers and campers.

Two weeks ago at The Rally in Phoenix, Rand McNally employees demonstrated the Woodall's information integrated in the TripMaker® RVND device. Those RVers who saw the demo gave it high marks. In particular, they raved about the depth of information, the ability to filter by campground amenities, and the option to review Woodall's ratings and campground costs.

With the addition of the Woodall's campground data, TripMaker® RVND's RV campground feature now includes:

RV parks and campgrounds with amenities such as dump stations, electric hook up
Contact information and seasonality for each campground
Private and public campgrounds including Corps of Engineers, National and State Parks
Woodall's campground data for thousands of commercial RV parks and campground locations, with amenities including:
Family-friendly campgrounds and pets-allowed locations
"Big Rig" parks
"Green parks"
Site information such as extended stay sites available, typical site width and pull thru information
